For those of us who suffer with back pain, the prospect of relief can often seem like a distant pipe dream. To make your life manageable, let’s take a look at the “90/90 Pain Relief Position" — a powerful approach with benefits that range from releasing tension, realigning the spine, helping the low back to relax, and giving us the pain relief we need so badly.

To get into position, lie face up on the floor with your feet on a chair or sofa. The furniture should be low to avoid putting pressure on the low back. If your sofa is too high, for instance, you can remove the cushions. You want the body to be able to relax comfortably.

Check your neck to make sure it is properly supported as you lie on your back. Most people are better off with the head elevated to prevent the neck from falling backwards and compressing the cervical spine. Relaxing the neck will allow relaxation to travel down the spine.

Your focus should be on taking slow, deep breaths to encourage relaxation and ease in the body. You’ll find that for many types of back pain, this position will ease your pain and give you a much-needed break from the cycles of pain.

Plan on spending 10 to 20 minutes in this position. Listen to your favorite podcast or music as relief begins.

Back pain can be disheartening, but with an easy remedy like lying on the floor and elevating your feet, you should find relief. This position can offer much-needed time for relaxation, ease, and expansion, giving your back the respite it needs so you can carry on with your life.
